Pick the right technologies for you. Which browser do you use? How about word processor? Do you use Word because everyone else does? Do you IE because it was installed? How about Firefox because it’s the “cool thing to do”?

I’ve learned that sometimes you have to go with your gut. Sometimes you need to buck the trends and do what actually works for you.
Here’s a good example for you, I’m in the midst of writing a book, my first, my publisher sends along a Word template document to use for all the chapters. We’re supposed to use Word to write all the chapters to zap them off to your editor.

I wrote a good 3/4 of the book like this. All along I had a feeling that I the technology was getting in my way. Word is a decent enough word processor, but you know the formatting was getting in the way. I heard of apps designed just for writing, and hadn’t tried them yet. Now was the time. So I did.

I am, in fact, writing this guest post in the app right now. There is no formatting to worry about. No worry about styles. Just writing. Writing pure and simple.

Does it work? Oh yeah. Will my editor like it? Yeah probably not. I can export to Word, but the link to the styles is broken.

Well I’ll just cross that bridge when I get to it.
