The Sweet (Blogging) Spot
Blogathon Workspace, 7:30 AM
Dave Pollard’s book, “Finding the Sweet Spot” has to be one of my recent favourite reads. He talks about three things – What you’re good at, What your passions are, and what’s needed that you care about.
Even if only two of these intersect, you don’t feel fully satisfied. For example, doing something you’re good at and that is needed, but aren’t passionate about will leave you disengaged.
Doing something you’re passionate about and that is needed but which is not something you’re good at will leave you frustrated at not being able to do as good a job as you would’ve liked to do. And so on.
An intersection of the three gives you the ultimate career nirvana. While from a career perspective, I don’t know if I’m there yet, I tried to map this concept to the blogathon effort.
Gifts/Skills: Writing (Okay, I’m no writer yet, but feel like this is something I’d like to improve on), Simplifying complex situations, finding solutions to complex problems etc.
Passions: Again, writing. Becoming a writer has been one of my dreams. I tried my hand and had fun with some fiction including participating in collaborative fiction writing in Protagonize (I need to get back there some time soon).
Purpose: Give something back to the society. Volunteer. Raise awareness of a cause I believe in. And so on.
This blogathon gives me the opportunity to combine all the three – the sweet spot.. I think. But does it mean that we always need to follow our hearts, quit our jobs and seek our passions, like the boy in The Alchemist, or The Monk who sold his Ferrari etc? Can we not find our passions in what we do? More in the next post..
A Business Systems Analyst pondering over requirements analysis, process improvements, project management, communication, story telling, the meaning of life and how everything fits together. This blog is to share my thoughts on all these and more.
