This may seem like a fairly obvious question; however, when I interact with employees who are unhappy with their careers I ask them, “what do you want to achieve in your career?”  At that point most employees can’t answer the question or I may receive an answer of, “I Know What I Don’t Want.”  I have found out that the lack of career goals is one of the leading factors of job dissatisfaction, conflict, and stress in the workplace. 

Tip number 1
“Never marry a miner”
That advice was from a most unlikely source and was totally unsolicited. I started my legal career in Pontefract, a close-knit mining community which, in the 1970′s, was recovering from the trauma of the miners’ strike. As an articled clerk, I was regularly dispatched to Leeds for County Court directions hearings. Appearing before the Senior Registrar with some trepidation, he suddenly fixed his beady eye on me, demanded to know which firm I represented and then barked to my consternation “Never marry a miner!”

After more than two decades, I have fulfilled my long cherished dream of becoming an entrepreneur by setting up my own web development company. For me staffing is not a big deal as I was into recruitment for years together.I have commenced my company and recruited adequate staff. I have good many projects on my hand. Getting projects too is not a big deal for me as I was also into business development for years together.

Would you ask for careers advice from a 13 year old?

Why would anyone in their right mind think that a play-station fixated, newly pubescent, angst ridden teenager was a good source of decision making? I can’t think of anyone I would trust less to make a major life decision for me. So why do we do it? The bewildering choices that schools now offer of BTEC, GCSE, Vocational, level 1 and National awards which start to channel students’ education in year 9; that’s the third years to anyone who is over 35. It would be a tough choice even for a mature person to make.
